Position: Guidewire engineer
Location: Austin, TX
Job Summary:
This position will consult with several Guidewire suite agile scrum teams from a technical and architectural perspective in order to refine business requirements for application updates related to projects, enhancements and compliance needs while supporting the design, construction, and implementation of these updates to the applications. The ideal candidate will be an individual that is an energetic and a skilled professional requiring minimal supervision, can lead others, and will serve as a technical liaison between the Business and IT.
The primary responsibility for this position is providing and managing technical input and support for development and maintenance of the organization's Policy Center, Billing Center and Smart Communications applications to support underwriting business functions including rating, workflow, processes and functional requirements, and system integrations. Works closely with the System and Process Analyst, the Business Analyst, the underwriting technical team and Accounting to support system development including out of the box functionality and best practices. Also works closely with the IT department.
This position will also provide the same support described above for the organizations Claim Center and Contact Manager applications as a secondary responsibility.
Major Duties:
· Works collaboratively with individuals and teams across the organization to develop strategies and initiatives as relates to system development and maintenance.
· Responsible for analyzing impacts of proposed system development on overall system workflow and standard industry practices.
· Identifies risks in business requirements and provides alternative solutions where appropriate.
· Responsible for evaluating and executing rating engine updates including development, calculations, annual rerate changes and related rules/activities.
· Ensures system integrations and downstream impacts are anticipated, evaluated and tested.
· Participates in evaluating and recommending system configuration based on out of the box functionality and best practices.
· Develops requirements for complex software development initiatives.
· Participates in establishing user acceptance test cases and performing user acceptance testing. Assists with functional testing of system enhancements or changes to existing system functionality, including rate verification, prior to implementation.
· Works with training team to provide information and perform as a resource for downstream impact and guidelines for end users.
· Assisting with formulating and defining systems (system configuration) scope and objectives through research and fact-finding combined with a basic understanding of business systems and industry requirements
· Working with BA & Project Team to develop & present/communicate technical concept alternatives, integration decisions, issues, plans
· Providing strong analytical skills that allow for identification of defects related to data characteristics
· Evaluating project impact through consultation with the business, regulatory / compliance, information technology management, development, quality assurance, validation, and training teams
Knowledge Required by the Position:
· Business, technical and architectural knowledge of the Guidewire suite of applications including Policy Center, Billing Center, Smart Communications, Claim Center and Contact Manager
· Having a working knowledge of relational databases, preferably MS SQL Server
· Ability to understand complex transactional processing standards required for premium allocation to support statistical and financial reporting
· Knowledge of the software development lifecycles.
· Knowledge of requirement and specification development principles.
· Knowledge of software testing methodologies.
· Knowledge of risk pool insurance principles.
· Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs
· Skill in decision making and problem solving.
· Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public.
· Skill in oral and written communication.
· Supervisory Controls:
· The Manager or Assistant Manager will assign work in terms of departmental goals and objectives.
Guidelines:
Guidelines include specific assigned department policies and procedures, as well as best practices based on internal IT policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application.
Complexity/Scope of Work:
The purpose of this position is to analyze business requirements from a best practices perspective and engage with complex system development. Provide expertise in software used by the Risk Pool to determine risks and identify best practices when working with the underwriting technical team to develop system requirements.

Minimum Qualifications
· Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.
· Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
· Experience in software development life cycle specifically with software products used by the Pool.
